Merlin Landing In Aspen, CO

What's it like to land a turboprop in Aspen, CO? Early video in my pilot career gives a front-row seat to landing in one of the most challenging airports in the country. This is in a merlin (SA227) I was a first officer (co-pilot) in this plane for several years. I learned so much about flying on this plane. I went from flight instructor to right seat merlin "driver" then later to the airlines,...

Watching this…… from my homeland in New Zealand, this video gives me a good insight into the day to day life of a pilot., great in-depth detail 🛫👍
Hey Thanks for watching . . . glad you liked it.
Ugggh
You are the prototypical lowlife scum that chauffeurs the rich leeches around and is even proud of it.
One of the best videos about aviation. Thank you Jerry for this.
Jimmy Buffets plane? Wow!!
You seem like a really good dude! Would love ya fly with ya ! 🤘🏻
I was part of the sales team for Dornier. A few other notes; aft of the pressure bulkhead is all composite, we had a full scale fuselage for sound testing during development where speakers were placed along the prop plane to simulate the noise and the engineers would "tune" the fuselage by using sound/frequency offsets. The noisiest part of the aircraft interior was the engine exhaust.
You're not flying a G650 - what are you flying Embraer or are you allowed to say? Gulfstreams are nice, especially the newer 650 - 700, Bombardier 5000? You just replaced for me The Corparate Pilot Life. Nice job
Been there, done that. I hope you eventually got an airline job.
Holy crap. Short takeoff runway.
I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see a safe landing after the drone finally turned to head home, but noooo, that drone was determined to go out in a blaze of glory
might want to keep your hand /fingers away from the mic when your talking.
Do these jets have black boxes
Sent you a linked in request. Look for request from Fred. I see you are at Flexjet now. Good outfit.
Another nice flight!
What sort of MEL restriction did you have leaving TUS? Sounded like a anti ice/de ice failure of some sort.
It failed the Ice test, so could not fly into icing conditions, which, at the time, Aspen and Rifle, CO both had.
Why are there 5 gear pins?
downlocks and . .well heck, it's been so long, I forgot what the others are for! LOL
@@jerrywhite2390 I never flew the jungle jet but I am guessing that 3 are for landing gear, 1 for nose gear steering bypass but no idea on the 5th one.
I see your ALPA lanyard. Who did you fly for?
I flew for Spirit and Endeavor
@@jerrywhite2390 thanks. I think Spirit is in serious trouble way beyond the 260 furloughs.
You two guys work very well together. Good CRM and checklist discipline. Are you still flying that airplane?
@@freds5619 No, the company let everyone go. I'm flying a Gulfstream 450 now
@@jerrywhite2390 nice!
Yep, I am addicted! Watch every video you post, over and ovr!
Thank you so much
I’m currently a student and my dream is to fly the pc-12. I currently have 50 hours and I’m in my XC phase. Something I wanted to ask is: do you have a 4 year degree? I’m 26 I haven’t went to college and I don’t want to but I was wanting to know if you think it’s something pilots should get? Thanks
These are GREAT videos!!! Nicely Done ✅. Funny as Hell! The Benny Hill music and loading🎵 😂
very cool
Jerry I just found your channel. So funny. Please make more videos Steve carrel please 😩
Just seeing you for first time. Great video. Love aviation and especially those handsome Pilots!
Jerry, gonna give us a new video?
Love your stuff, Jerry! Interestingly, this video was made June 2016. According to airlinefleet, this airplane was broken up in February 2017. Sad, what a beautiful bird.
not having a killswitch makes DJI drones super dangerous. if this was one of my FPV drones I would have disarmed it at the first sign of disobedience, better it fall and break then run wild and hit something.
Dude! Much respect! Loved your week in the life. I just fly sims. Never did it. Always wanted to after 86 but the cards were dealt differently.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to post
Amazing camera work and detailed explanations!
I was seriously considering switching careers at 46 years old, but the more a look into it the more I feel like it's just a nightmare, whether you're a corporate, airline, survey pilot, crop duster, or instructor- I'm single and can live without weekends and holidays, being away from home, but working every hour of the day, stupid long hours, any time to self is spent, commuting, and resting from all the exhaustion, having to be retrained every 6 months and usually late at night, the only thing that I can think of that might make up for it is if you get to see cool places, but looks like it's not always cool places and you usually don't even have the find to explore and enjoy
It’s a good gig and pays well. Yea, the over nights can be cool, but often times it’s just crap places. The thing that makes this job good is if/when you have great crew. They can be like a family for you when you’re on the road. The job is not for everyone, and the “float if flying” does go away at some point. But it is/can be a great career. Beats working in an office. 46 is not old though … even for airlines, you could still have a 13 year career.
@@jerrywhite2390 thanks for the reply my friend, and appreciate your content, you truly give people an inside look and feel of what pilots do Someone my age getting into the Airline, you mentioned has 13 years left, I'm guessing it probably takes that long to gain any good seniority, with a decent schedule
You're freaking hilarious And obviously love pilot Life
Thanks so much for this!! If you don't mind me asking- how long have you been flying? How old were you when you got licensed? Have you flown as an airline pilot, what made you choose corporate? Do you live betting a pilot, what don't u like
Just stumbled on this video the other night at work - if anything it made me more interested in flying corporate, once I get my CPL. Thanks was a great video, definately checkingout the rest.
Thank you!
So interesting; thank you.
Great video, whats the range on that aircraft?
You need to do more videos, you’re awesome!
Too much loud music.

LOL- no . .we just didnt show the taxi in. Thanks for watching the and question
Only through the first 15 minutes of this, and gotta say I,m loving it. If I was a charter pilot flying with you would be one of the perks. Thank you for allowing us into your amazing life, your energy is infectious. 🎉🎉🎉

Really cool video of your job and service to your customers. God bless you brother and all that you do. I would like to be a pilot but just don't have the finances to accomplish this goal. Really awesome job to have and pays well I'm sure👍
I appreciate that . . . keep going for your goals though, no matter what . . . it took me 10 years just to get my private pilot license because of finances.
If you want something bad enough you'll find a way- get a loan, have you looked at flight schools over seas that are a fraction of the cost
My friend, I just came across a youtube video, apparently if you hire and get trained by a CFI it's way way cheaper, and better training ua-cam.com/video/zxg3OcGp200/v-deo.htmlsi=JY9zTEQ-AjFy3aZD
Good thing this pilot doesn't spend too much time with the passengers.
ha ha ha ha I can argue with that!
I can't believe I just watched a 65-minute video of what I do for a living.
HA HA HA I am sorry for that!!! It is kinda funny how we want to see how we each live . . . was it close to how your week goes? Thanks for watching.... this is an old video, surprised anyone even sees it anymore.
Turn the MUSIC OFF
DONE!
I'm sure you have had this question a million times. How much and how long does it take to become a pilot of your standing. and what does it pay? love the videos.
I’m not the OP obviously, but I can probably get you a pretty good ballpark idea on some of your questions. In order to be a corporate pilot, you need a bare minimum of the following certifications: Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot License, Multi-Engine Certification. The cost varies depending on where in the country you go to school and the type of school you go through. The very cheapest to get to that point will be around 50-60k. Some people take longer to learn and so that means more money. Most pilots also earn their Certified Flight Instructor and Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument Licenses as well so they can teach and build more hours/experience before they are able to be hired. I am starting a new job as a first officer (Second In Command) next month for a private jet operation. The salary is $60k per year starting. After a year or so, I could sign a contract to get type rated in that aircraft, which means I can also fly in the left seat, or Pilot In Command. Usually your pay doubles or at least increases greatly when that happens. I have no idea what the gentlemen in this video are making per year. They are flying a very nice jet that usually takes years to get placed on. My guess is they’re making 250-350k per year. They’re possibly making more if they also fly overseas flights. Hope that helps.
@@VictoryAviation hey man thanks for that ! What in your opinion are the complex calculations they talk about ? Trying to figure out if I'm actually smart enough to do it lol. Not great at math. Thanks again !
@@powshredder3716 There’s a lot of people WAY smarter than us that are pilots. There are also those that struggled super hard but still made it. Honestly the math isn’t super hard. It’s just understanding HOW to calculate things like performance numbers, cross country planning, etc. You could do it. It takes a lot of studying but if you focus like crazy and put the work in, you can absolutely do it.
@@VictoryAviation ok that's cool. Was a bit worried about that part. How long did it take you to get where you're at? also I am 50. I was a carpenter forever then a truck driver. I was told I was too old for heli because I just wouldn't get hired. You think it's too late too late to start this? I don't want to fly airlines because of the forced retirement at 65 but corporate you can fly till you die, is what I heard?
@@powshredder3716 correct on forced retirement. Though the FAA just raised the age to 67. But if you fly for part 91 or part 135, you can fly as long as you have at least a 2nd class medical. Really the training time comes down to a couple factors; 1) How much time do you have to devote to training/how much time WILL YOU devote to training? 2) How are you going to pay for the training? If you can answer, Training will be your only responsibility and you’re willing to focus only on that, and you have access to the appropriate funds to complete your training, then you could do everything you need to do in around 1 - 1.5 years. Then you’ll need to build some more hours to get to a minimum of 500 - 700 to get hired on as SIC like how I am getting ready to be.
Who did the executive refit in this plane?
